Read about how to navigate your way through the many study options and make the right choice at the University of Copenhagen.

It's completely normal to feel uncertain about which programme to choose. Many are in the same situation—after all, it’s a big decision that takes time and reflection.

Why are you unsure?

The first step is understanding the reason behind your uncertainty. Is it because you're not sure what interests you? Are you uncertain about your career goals? Or just overwhelmed by the number of options?

By identifying the source of your doubt, you’ll be better equipped to make an informed decision that’s right for you.

Thinking about taking a gap year?

Benefits and drawbacks

Benefits of a gap year:

  • Time for reflection: Consider your future plans and career goals.
  • Experience and growth: Work or travel can give you valuable life experiences and personal development.
  • Finances: Earn and save money for university.

Drawbacks of a gap year:

  • Delay: You’ll start—and finish—your education later.
  • Motivation: It can be difficult to return to study mode after a break.
  • Peer pressure: You may feel behind when friends have already started their studies.

Taking a gap year after upper secondary school is entirely normal. In fact, most young people today take 1–3 years off before starting university. A gap year can be a great opportunity to discover what truly excites you and to prepare mentally and practically for university life.

There are many ways to spend a gap year. You might choose to work and save money, travel, or strengthen your academic qualifications. No matter how you choose to spend the time, a gap year can help you learn more about yourself, your interests, and your future goals—making it easier to make a thoughtful decision when you're ready to begin your studies.

Self-reflection

Self-reflection is a crucial first step in choosing the right degree.

Here are some questions to help you clarify your interests and strengths:

  • What am I interested in?
  • What subjects am I good at?
  • How do I learn best?
  • What kind of learning environment suits me?
  • What do I want from my future studies?
  • What kind of job would I like to have in the future?

By answering these questions, you'll gain a clearer picture of your preferences and goals—helping you choose a degree that aligns with your interests and strengths. It's the first step towards a successful and fulfilling university experience at UCPH.

Study choice guide

Below is a study choice step-by-step guide to help you move forward.

Start by setting a date for when you want to have made your study decision - and a date for when to begin exploring your options.

1

Make a pros and cons list

Once you've shortlisted the programmes you're interested in, create a pros and cons list for each one. Add to the lists as you go through each step of the guide.

Getting an overview is key when choosing your degree. UCPH offers a wide range of programmes, and it’s important to find the one that suits you best.

Explore our Interest Wheel to see all the programmes we offer.

2

What is the focus of the programme?

Ask yourself: What is the main focus of this programme? What do you like about it? What less so?
Try the programme match tool for the ones that interest you.
Add your thoughts to the pros and cons list.

3

What subjects will you study?

Check the “Teaching and structure” section. What subjects are included? What does the curriculum say about the content?
How is the teaching organised—lectures, group work, independent study, or hands-on exercises?

Watch a “Sneak Peek” video to get a feel for different teaching styles at UCPH.
Note down your impressions—and any questions you want to explore further.

4

What is the student life like?

Find out what current students say about their studies and what kinds of academic and social activities are available.
Follow @kustudieliv on Instagram (in Danish only), learn about student life at UCPH, attend an Open House event, or try being a Student for a Day.

Update your pros and cons list. What surprised you? What do you want to know more about?

5

What are the career opportunities?

Look into the career prospects when reading about the programme. What industries do graduates work in? What types of roles are mentioned? What is the academic job market like?

Also check which Master’s degrees the Bachelor’s programme gives access to, as that can affect your career opportunities.
Add your notes to the list.

6

Get ready to choose

Once you’ve explored your options, it’s time to reflect.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s the balance between pros and cons?
  • What questions remain unanswered?
  • What are the key similarities and differences between the programmes I’m interested in?
  • What else do I want to find out? Should I talk to a student guidance counsellor?

It’s a good idea to visit the programme, get a feel for the atmosphere, and talk to students.

Now you’re ready to make a well-informed study choice!
