Get an overview of the benefits of going on exchange, potential destinations, how to plan your stay, and much more.

Why study abroad?

With UCPH’s global exchange agreements, you can study abroad for one or two semesters at recognised universities in the Nordic countries, Europe and around the world.

An exchange stay gives you the opportunity to experience everyday life in another country, gain new academic perspectives and immerse yourself in a different study culture. You challenge yourself, broaden your horizon and return with new insights into your field of study.

As a student at UCPH, you can spend one or two semesters at one of the university's many partner universities in Europe and the Nordic region, Asia, Australia, North America and Africa. Where you can go on exchange depends on your degree and study programme.

It’s really great being an exchange student because you meet so many other young people from all over the world.

Build an international network and gain new perspectives

During your exchange stay, you meet students from many different countries and become part of an international academic community. You form friendships, collaborate across cultures and gain first-hand experience of studying in a global context.

These experiences are valuable in a world that calls for graduates who can think and work across borders, whether you pursue a career in Denmark or internationally.

Develop personally and academically

Living and studying abroad helps you become more independent and adaptable. You develop intercultural awareness, strengthen your language skills and gain confidence in navigating new environments.

Planning your exchange stay

Start planning your exchange stay well in advance. Ideally, you should begin preparing 1–1.5 years before your intended departure.

The need for preparation varies depending on the type of exchange and the destination. Careful planning gives you time to prepare financially.

Pre-approval of your study stay

If you wish to go on exchange, your study stay abroad must be pre-approved by your study board. This means that the board at UCPH must approve the academic content of your stay at the foreign university – in good time.

When you return to Denmark, you must submit documentation of your study activities abroad to UCPH.

Exchange and climate considerations

The University of Copenhagen sees studying abroad as a valuable opportunity to add an international academic dimension to your degree. Going on exchange also supports global citizenship, cultural diversity and the sharing of knowledge across borders.
