Please note that the language requirements do not apply to applicants with legal right of admission.
Changes to to Language Requirements
The following two changes apply to applicants seeking admission with study start 1 September 2026:
- A common deadline for documenting language requirements will be introduced across all master's programmes at the university. This means that you must provide documentation that you meet the language requirements by the application deadline.
- Minimum subscores for TOEFL and IELTS will be introduced for English A and B levels across all master's programmes at the university.

Documentation
Remember the documentation deadline
You must provide documentation that you fulfil the Danish and English language requirements. The University of Copenhagen must receive the documentation no later than the day that of the application deadline. This also applies if you have taken a language test.
Take the test early
It varies how long it takes to receive the results from the day you have taken the test. Therefore, we recommend that you research how long you need to wait for the result. You are responsible for making sure we receive the results by the deadline.
If you have previously taken an IELTS- or TOEFL-test, make sure the results are not older than two years by study start 1 September / 1 February. Cambridge CAE/CP1 and CPE/CP2 are valid no matter when you took the test.
Make sure to have valid documentation
The University of Copenhagen only accepts the documentation listed below regarding the Danish and the English language requirements.
Missing or incomplete documentation for your language skills will lead to the rejection of the application.
Danish A language requirement
You can fulfil the language requirement Danish A a number of ways. You may have taken Danish A as part of your upper secondary education or passed a test proving your language skills.
If you have Danish A from your Danish upper secondary education (fx. stx, hhx, htx, hf), you must upload one of the following documents to your application:
- exam diploma
- transcript of records
- a transcript from the Exam database
The document must be verified; meaning stamped and signed by the educational institution that issued the document or contain a valid digital signature.
If you have taken Danish A as a single subject, you must upload one of the following documents to your application:
- exam diploma
- transcript of records
- a transcript from the Exam database

You fulfil the Danish A requirement, if you have an upper secondary education from a Nordic country with courses that the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science assess as corresponding to Danish A in content and level.
The Nordic countries consist of Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Åland.
You must upload one of the following documents to your application:
- exam diploma
- transcript of records
The document must be verified; meaning stamped and signed by the educational institution that issued the document or contain a valid digital signature.

You fulfil the Danish A requirement, if you have an upper secondary education from an EU country with courses that the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science assess as corresponding to Danish A in content and level.
You must upload one of the following documents to your application:

You fulfil the Danish A requirement, if you have an International Baccalaureate (IB) or European Baccalaureate (EB) with courses that the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science assess as corresponding to Danish A in content and level.
You must have completed your EB from one of the Europa schools in Copenhagen, Luxembourg, Brussels, Mol, München, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Varese or Alicante.

You can pass “Studieprøven” to document your language skills
“Studieprøven” is offered by both the municipalities and private language schools in all of Denmark. The test consists of three parts:
- reading
- writing
- oral communication
You must pass all parts with a minimum grade of 02 unless you are applying for admission to the following study programmes which require a minimum grade of 7:
- dentistry
- medicine (Køge)
- medicine (Copenhagen)
- pharmacy
- veterinary medicine
Before 2018 the test consisted of four parts, if you took the test then the above grades apply to all four parts.
You must upload one of the following documents to your application:
- exam diploma
Alternatively, you can instead pass the Tisus-testen (Swedish) with the grade “Godkänt”, the Norwegian-test with a minimum of “C1” in all parts, or the Bergen-test (Norwegian) with “Godt bestått” in all parts.
English B language requirement
You can fulfil the language requirement English B a number of ways. For example, you may have taken English B as part of your upper secondary education or passed an international test proving your language skills.
If you fulfil the language requirement English A, you also fulfil the requirement English B.
If you have English B from your Danish upper secondary education (fx. stx, hhx, htx, hf), you must upload one of the following documents to your application:

TOEFL- og IELTS-results are only valid two years from the time you take the test. The test cannot be older than two years by the time you start your study programme 1 September / 1 February.

Examples of unacceptable documentation
The University of Copenhagen does not accept the following examples as proof of your language skills:
- a diploma from an upper secondary education, a bachelor's degree or a master's degree where the language of instruction was English
- a statement from your university
- a statement from your teacher
- language tests other than those stated
- a combination of several incomplete qualifications from the list above
Incomplete or ambiguous documentation of your language skills will result in the rejection of your application.
