About the SEAL project
The SEAL project (with Project Investigator Teis Hansen, funding by Novo Nordisk) aims at supporting a transition towards a sustainable European agri-food and land-use system. The first task of the project consists in mapping policy targets relevant to agri-food, land-use and freshwater across 13 EU countries. Once identified, these targets need to be contextualized and understood across different national agri-food systems. Indeed, we argue that the level of ambition of these targets is not absolute but embedded in context, reflecting national capabilities and constraints. Looking specifically at water-related targets, we analyse how are these formulated in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Denmark and Romania. We introduce an indicator-based methodology to assess “contextual ambitiousness”, defined as the distance between policy targets and existing national baseline conditions. In this seminar, we introduce our first results and methodology.
