Brøndsted Group - Organic Synthesis

The Brøndsted Group synthesises advanced organic molecules for solar energy storage, molecular electronics and related functional materials.

Research focus

Organic Synthesis – Light-harvesting Molecules

The group works on the synthesis of new advanced organic molecules by combining classical organic synthesis with modern metal-catalysed coupling reactions – often involving oligo(en)ynes.

A particular focus is on the development of chromophoric and/or redox-active conjugated molecules that can be used for harvesting and storing solar energy or as switches for molecular electronics.

Projects

Projects in the group are within the following topics:

  • synthesis and functionalisation of molecular photoswitches, such as dihydroazulenes and norbornadienes
  • acetylenic scaffolding with boron subphthalocyanine chromophores
  • functionalisation of redox-active indenofluorene-extended tetrathiafulvalenes
  • synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with redox-active units at the periphery – functionalised graphene sheets
  • development of new carbon allotropes – in particular, segments of 6,6,12-graphyne
