Sørensen Group

The Sørensen Group develops lanthanide coordination chemistry and fluorescence technology for sensing, imaging and separation, combining synthesis, spectroscopy, sensor materials and collaborations across environmental science, biology and industrial R&D.

Research focus

Lanthanide coordination chemistry

The last decade we been investigating the chemistry of lanthanide ions in solution. Our main tools are synthetic organic chemistry, physical chemis-try, optical spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and good old physical chemistry.

Optical sensor & Fluorescence technology

Since 2011 we have been working on making and commercializing optical sensors. We make sensor chemistry, materials hardware etc. And we use sensors to measure on e.g. beer. The sensors measure chemical parameters and are based on organic dyes, lanthanide complexes, nanoparticles and are used in environmental science and biology.

Projects

We are approx. 10 researchers at all levels all working together, but on our own projects. The projects that you can do include:

  • Synthesis of new ligands for lanthanide ions
  • Making probes for bioimaging
  • Investigating the formation of crystals
  • Making nanoparticle based sensors
  • Making supramolecular assemblies
  • Studying fluorescent sensors
  • Determining photophysical properties
  • Building new spectrometers
  • Spectroelectrochemistry
  • Working with nuclear fuel recycling
  • Investigating separation processes.

Collaborations

We work with research groups in academia that are experts in techniques that we need in our research, both at UCPH and at other universities like Oxford, Rennes, Durham, and McMaster.

We also work on research and development with companies like Pufin ID (DK), Unisense (DK), and Endress&Hauser (D).
