Edgar Rubin (1886–1951) received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1915 for his dissertation Visual Figures. The dissertation is in many ways groundbreaking for the study of visual perception. It is based on a careful phenomenological description of our visual experiences and is especially known for introducing the fundamental distinction between figure and ground in perceptual psychology. More broadly, Edgar Rubin is particularly famous for his bistable figure, Rubin’s Vase, which can be perceived either as a vase or as two faces looking at each other. The Department of Psychology invites you to the opening of the Rubin’s Vase exhibition, which has been generously donated by Rubin’s relatives.
