Interview with Danish film director Lars von Trier on
Antichrist
16 September 2009
Anybody who has seen Lars von Trier's latest film
Antichrist – or any other film in the director's oeuvre for
that matter – will know that Lars von Trier is not a man of
readily accessible films. And only very few people, if any,
know what is on von Trier's mind when he writes his scripts
and directs his movies. But at a conference that was held at
the University of Copenhagen this summer about a hundred
film buffs came a bit closer to understanding the enigmatic
film director. And now everyone else is presented with that
same opportunity.
Antichrist was shown at a special screening at the Danish
Film Institute at the '7th International Conference on the
Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image' that was
held at the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication
at the University of Copenhagen. The screening of von
Trier's latest film marked the closure of the two-day
conference packed with paper presentations and film
discussions, and present at the screening was the director
himself.
The director participated in a Q&A session with associate
professor and von Trier expert Peter Schepelern and the
audience, and this conversation is now available as a
sound file at the conference webpage. The conversation
reveals how Lars von Trier was not completely satisfied with
the visual style of Antichrist, and we are told about von
Trier's relationship with shamanism, about evil in
Antichrist and many other subjects.
The co-organizer of the conference, The Society for
Cognitive Studies of Moving Images, is an interdisciplinary
organization for scholars with an interest in film analysis
and moving pictures. For more information on the
