University of Copenhagen ranks 2 in the North
Posted 9 November 2007
University of Copenhagen, University of Uppsala (Sweden)
and the University of Helsinki (Finland) are the only three Nordic universities represented on the top 100
list from the 2007 Times Higher Education Supplement (THES)
university ranking. This year, the University of Copenhagen
is ranked as number 93 worldwide and number 33 in Europe. University of Uppsala is number 71 worldwide and 24 in Europe and University of Helsinki is number 100 worldwide and 35 in Europe.
The ranking is based on a number of criteria e.g. peer
review from researchers all around the world, and number of
citations in research papers and journals.
- The survey shows that University of Copenhagen must
work continuously on positioning itself as a highly esteemed
university internationally. Our aim is to be among the
leading basic research universities in Europe, says Rector
Ralf Hemmingsen.
Another recent international ranking placed University of
Copenhagen much higher on the list, and last year the University was
ranked 54 by the THES ranking. But the results can not be
compared directly from year to year. This year THES has made
several changes in the survey method. Among other things, a
different research journal database is used this year to
measure citations, and the number of researchers at each
institution is counted slightly different. Research areas
such as theology, humanities and law are not covered very
well in the citation analysis.
